Artist Spotlight Diana Farfan

Diana is a full time artist and cultural agent. She was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia. Her fondness for ceramic sculpture goes back to her childhood, when the pre-Columbian figures and colonial architecture were her focus of interest. In 1999 she received a BFA in Ceramics and Printmaking at Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá, Colombia; and in 2010 she obtained a MFA in Ceramics and Sculpture at University of South Carolina, Columbia, USA. She also studied at the University of Anchorage, Alaska, and at the Tainan National University of the Arts in Taiwan as exchange student. She currently lives, works, and teaches in Greenville, South Carolina, USA. Besides offering, “Play with Clay” classes at her own studio and workshops at diverse art centers; Diana is an art coach for Hispano-Latino Artists. She serves as member of the board of directors of Palmetto Luna Arts, a non-profit that promotes Hispano artists and Latin Culture in South Carolina, USA.

The Nocturnes series is an annual theme, where each October, FATVillage curators Leah Brown and Peter Symons bring together a group exhibition of contemporary artists in themes touching on the supernatural. Previous themes have included “Hyperstition”, in which artists explored notions of reality of the intangible, “Monstrous Strange”, in which the artists created renditions of the monsters they struggle with, from the personal to the societal and political, and most recently, “The Second Life of Trees”, where the exhibition was imagined as artworks made from the wood of an enchanted forest that had been cut down, resulting in a new kind of forest of powerful and strange, wooden sculptural installations. Now in their sixth year presenting the Nocturnes series, Brown and Symons are returning to one of the enduring original inspirations of traditional autumnal mythologies: Ofrendas. Ofrendas are the Dia de los Muertos tradition of creating temporary altars to honor departed loved ones.   

For Nocturnes VI: The Lost and Found, the artworks do not resemble traditional Ofrendas, but rather push their concepts and media to include performance, video, site specificity and interactivity.

"Solving by the Slice" (suggested donation $5 per family)
Participants will create a three-dimensional plastic pizza/pie slice out of assorted plastic and paper “waste” and other petroleum-driven disposables often consumed by families. Each individual slice creation will be combined to make a whole pie(s), representing 6 things your family can start to do to reduce plastic waste consumption in your household. These pizzas/pies can be delivered to key decision-makers in the community, offering slices of solutions that can be implemented at a larger level.

Artist spotlight: TD Gillispie

TD Gillispie is a local artist and has had a solo show in our library gallery. It is our opinion that she is one of the best artists in South Florida and one of the most underrepresented.  Please take a moment to explore her work. Artist Bio:

TD Gillispie lives and works in West Palm Beach, Florida. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and  museums including Dacia Gallery in New York City, Art Palm Beach, 101

Exhibit in Miami, Boca Raton Museum of Art, and  Whitespace: The Mordes Collection in West Palm Beach. Her work is included in the Mordes And Helander collections. Gillispie's paintings have  been featured in Studio Visit Magazine. She  was born  in Columbus, Ohio and attended Marshall University.

Artist statement:

I have always been a maker, a creator, a fixer of things. The practice of taking something in disrepair, be it furniture or a house for example, and refinishing or restoring it has always been a thrill to me and, in most cases, necessary. So, therefore, this same principle spills over into the way I create art.

I work in several different mediums but keep a cohesive look as a whole.

For each specific artwork, I choose a medium to most effectively speak the story I wish to tell. I collect vintage imagery and broken or well­worn toys from long ago for inspiration in my paintings.

I use specific recycled vintage or antique items for installation and mixed media, such as salvaged windows, doors, tv’s, church pews, lingerie, etc. These items are collected over a long period of time or thoughtfully sought out after writing a site­specific proposal for new work.

In making an installation I usually choose to create a room: a personal defined space for reflective thought with a prompted topic of inspiration.

Typically in painting, my goal is to use subject matter in which I balance sweet and sinister, or cute and creepy, by not stepping over the line in either direction.

If work is built on mistakes and corrections, I feel it gives richness and layers to the piece, thus adding a human quality as compared to the journey of our life on earth.

Artist spotlight-Allison Kotzig

Allison Kotzig is an international conceptual, installation, mixed-media and video artist. Her challenging and often amusing 3-d pieces highlight misogynistic undercurrents in culture. Her video work addresses the dreamy interface between reality and trance and our individual connection to Infinity and the Universe. She is involved with the nomadic Public Art projects NestGen and Giants in the City, which brings monumental inflatable sculpture to cities around the world. As well, she is a co-founder of the collective Artists for Black Lives Matter. She currently splits her time between Miami and a small village in the foothills of the Slovak Carpathian Mountains, where she helps to run an Inn and organic slow food restaurant dedicated to local produce, ethical practices and DIY products

Exxpectations

This group show features contemporary art created by 18 women who defy expectations.  Curator statements offer two different points of view from women in the art world: that of professional artist, Brenda Zappitell and that of Cornell Museum curator, Melanie Johanson.  Together, they have selected unique works with a female voice.  Artist commentaries will share perspective on expectations projected on to women in the art world. Artwork included in this exhibition has been shown in galleries and museums worldwide.

Artistically Speaking

One gallery will be dedicated to Artistically Speaking, a major exhibition project being produced by Florida Atlantic University’s Jupiter Library Gallery.  This is a travelling show, with the first stop at the Cornell Museum, with larger versions of the show being exhibited in two locations in Miami during 2016-2017, respectively.
